Stories of Impact

Currently, there are no bursaries allocated exclusively for RVRC students. Those experiencing financial difficulties must either compete for scholarships designated for RVRC or rely on bursaries administered at the University level.

Being a recipient of the RVRC Scholarship was pivotal in empowering me to give back meaningfully to the RVRC community and expanding my learning horizons. During my time as a Resident Assistant, I supported fellow residents by using part of the scholarship funds to create personalised welfare packs for them – one of my favourite ways to ensure that the residents felt valued and cared for. I was also able to pursue my dream of studying abroad as the scholarship helped to fund my participation in the Winter School programme at Korea University in December 2024. This experience enriched my student journey richly in ways that would not have been possible otherwise.

As an RVRC scholarship recipient , my time in the College was greatly enriched with once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunities and experiences. The scholarship allowed me to involve myself more actively in College activities without having to worry about financial costs. For instance, I participated in a 10-day study trip to Malaysia as part of RVC2000, and served as the head of Jukebox (RVRC’s Music Interest Group). These experiences enabled my personal growth in various areas such as cross-cultural awareness and leadership. They also provided me with an avenue to contribute to the RVRC community and beyond, overall resulting in a deeply meaningful two years in RVRC.

Over the past three years, RVRC has been more than just a place to stay, it’s become my home. With my parents recently moving back to Japan, I’ve come to value RVRC even more as a space of support and growth. The RVRC scholarship has helped me navigate living alone while balancing academics and music. Encouraged by the support RVRC has given me emotionally and financially, I led Jukebox, our Music Interest Group, as president in Year 2 and later as a mentor. I also joined the RVRC Symposium Executive Committee to contribute further. Now in my final year, I’m excited to give back as a Resident Assistant to this supportive community.

I joined RVRC in 2022, and one of the first communities that captured my interest was the Music Interest Group - Jukebox. Being part of this group reignited my passion for music and pushed me to learn instruments beyond the acoustic guitar I started with. The RVRC scholarship provided invaluable financial support, enabling me to purchase new instruments and refine my craft. With this backing, I was able to perform at flagship events like Concert By The Ridge, performing for over 400 attendees and gaining unforgettable experiences as a musician and performer.
