Southeast Asia Friendship Initiative (SFI)
Home to nearly 640 million people, Southeast Asia stands as one of the most culturally rich and dynamic regions on the planet, and it's right on Singapore's doorstep. The NUS Southeast Asia Friendship Initiative (SFI) is designed to help undergraduates in residential colleges make the most of this unique geographical advantage, offering an academic gateway into a region brimming with complexity, opportunity, and relevance.
All SFI courses are built around a single SEA country, grounding students in the specific cultural, social, and political landscape of that nation rather than offering a surface-level regional overview. Each course is anchored to one or more of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and/or themes of Innovation and Enterprise (I&E), ensuring that learning is connected to real, pressing global challenges. The centrepiece of the experience is an immersive study trip to the country in focus, where classroom theory gives way to firsthand engagement with the communities, institutions, and ideas you've been studying.
RVRC's specially curated suite of SFI courses offer a distinctive academic experience. These credit-bearing courses blend rigorous academic inquiry with immersive, real-world engagement centred around a 10-day field trip to a selected Southeast Asian country. Rather than studying sustainability in the abstract, students are placed at the heart of the action: working directly alongside local community partners, NGOs, and government offices to examine how the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) play out on the ground. This hands-on approach challenges students to grapple with the complex, context-specific tensions between global sustainability frameworks and local realities to develop not just knowledge, but genuine cross-cultural competency and critical thinking.
For undergraduates looking to make their academic journey count beyond the campus, RVRC's SFI courses offers a rare opportunity to earn course credit while gaining the kind of lived, contextual understanding of Southeast Asia that simply cannot be replicated in a classroom.
