Students from Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) had the honour of hosting Ms Poh Li San, Chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Sustainability and the Environment and Member of Parliament (MP) for Sembawang West SMC, for an engaging fireside chat with the NUS community on 25 August 2025. We were also privileged to be joined by Ms Nadia Samdin, Deputy Chairperson of the GPC for Sustainability and the Environment and an MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC. This session was organised by the RV Climate Cafe Student Interest Group and focused on Singapore’s approach to sustainability and ongoing efforts in this domain.
The event commenced with Ms Poh sharing the origins of her passion for climate conservation, rooted in her personal experiences with natural spaces during her formative years. She provided insights into her diverse career, from serving as a helicopter pilot to her transition into public service. Attendees gained a comprehensive understanding of Ms Poh’s various responsibilities, including her role as GPC Chairperson and her work related to Changi Airport Terminal 5. The dialogue further explored topics such as Singapore’s energy transition and upstream waste management, with audience members actively engaging Ms Poh on these pressing issues. The session concluded with Ms Poh offering valuable advice to NUS students aspiring to pursue careers in sustainability.
Overall, this interactive fireside chat offered meaningful perspectives on Singapore's proactive strategies in addressing sustainability challenges within a rapidly evolving global context. The discussion underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration encompassing government, community, and individual efforts in driving innovative and effective solutions for sustainability.
