The World Is Our Classroom

By making the world our classroom, RVRC offers students a distinct two-year living-and-learning experience. With the RVRC focus on sustainability and experiential and outdoor learning, many RVRC courses take students out of the classroom to provide hands-on learning experiences. The RVRC Programme promotes stewardship of society and the environment through interdisciplinary education, active community engagement, and critical reflection.

RVRC students work closely with dedicated Fellows, called Academic Advisors (AA) throughout their residency. Learning is conducted in small groups to enhance student engagement with their AAs and their peers. Collaborative learning ensures that our students are deeply engaged and supported throughout their learning journey.

Co-academic activities complement formal learning in the academic courses to make learning fun while becoming a catalyst for change. We offer diverse outdoor learning activities and industry engagement opportunities to broaden horizons, and diversify skills, enabling students in an ever-changing complex world.

The RVRC Programme

RVRC offers a two-year programme, aligned with the enhanced NUS General Education Curriculum. RVRC courses are map to four of the six General Education pillars, namely: Community and Engagement, Critique and Expression, Cultures and Connections, and Singapore Studies. All courses will be taught for one semester and carry 4 Units each.

RVRC students have the choice to select one course from each of the four pillars. Over two years, students will be expected to read one course from each of the four pillars to fulfil the requirements of the RVRC Programme and achieve certification*. The curriculum for the RVRC Programme will be worth 16 Units, and RVRC students completing the two-year RVRC Programme will receive this recognition on their official NUS transcript as well.

Students have to read the remaining two General Education pillars of Data Literacy and Digital Literacy outside the RVRC Programme, as offered by the university or their faculty. More information on how the RVRC curriculum fulfils further graduation requirements may be specified by your faculty.

*For RVRC students from the College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS)

RVRC students from CHS who read the 4 RVRC courses will be exempted from reading the following CHS Common Curriculum courses:

  • Communities and Engagement
  • Writing
  • Interdisciplinary Course I*
  • Interdisciplinary Course II*

*CHS XDP (PPE, DSE or BES) students are exempted from reading the two Interdisciplinary Courses I & II in the CHS common curriculum and these courses will count towards the UE requirements of their XDPs instead.

*For students from Law, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and other programmes with curricular constraints:

An academic pathway has been tailored for the students to read courses with RVRC as part of the college experience. Students from Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Law would only be required to read 1 RVRC course in each academic year, with the following arrangement:

Law

The two RVRC courses will be read as enrichment, i.e. these courses will not count towards the requisite units in the Law Degree Programme. Reading the 2nd RVRC course will be subject to the Law Vice-Dean (Academic Affairs)’s approval based on the student’s performance in Year 1.

Dentistry & Medicine

The two RVRC courses will be read as enrichment, i.e. these courses will not appear in the transcript of the Dentistry/Medicine students. A separate academic plan will be created for these students, who will not need to participate in course registration for RVRC Courses.

Nursing & Pharmacy

The two RVRC courses (worth 8 units) will be read as Unrestricted Electives (UE) by Nursing & Pharmacy students.
