On 19 September, 24 RVRC students accompanied by 2 RVRC staff, visited the Singapore Airlines Engineering Company’s (SIAEC) facility adjacent to Changi Airport. After making it through the tight security, the students were first briefed on the corporate structure of the SIAEC by their Executive Vice President of Operations, Mr Ivan Neo. Students learnt about the daunting technical aspects of the job as well as the high stakes, the lives of passengers, that demands an extremely rigorous training totalling 40 months for some of the positions.
Being a highly regulated industry, it is difficult for maintenance companies to differentiate themselves to attract customers and grow their business. SIAEC has succeeded by being cost-competitive and time-efficient through their numerous innovations, and students learnt about product innovation at SIAEC. They also got a rare glimpse of an aircraft hangar - a striking sight as it provided a sense of the scale of operations at SIAEC. At the time of the student visit, a Boeing 747-400 and an Airbus A380 were amongst some of the aircraft being maintained!
