On the May Day long weekend the RV Green Rangers organised a gardening weekend, to which RVRC students were invited to try their hands on working the soil. The event comprised two days of experiential learning. On the first day students went to Patricia's garden to learn about Gardening for Wildlife, which is one focus of the RV Green Rangers. Gardening for Wildlife means that one keeps the needs of wildlife in mind when planning a garden or park. As such, there is an emphasis on planting native species and plants that are beneficial to wildlife, such as birds and butterflies. Another technique is to create small eco ponds and to keep wood cuttings and leaf litter in the garden to create habitats for fungi and insects, as well as hiding places for geckos and snakes. The students were also harvesting bananas and coconuts, which came as a nice refreshment before they prepared saplings and cuttings for the planting next day.
On the second day students worked really hard at RVRV. First, they reworked the plot at Block C. Here the ground sheets were taken out with heavy chanko work. Then 3 small banana trees, mulberry trees, pagoda flowers, and wild pepper were planted. With that job well done students moved to the ramp where the tall grasses were partially removed and saplings and cuttings were planted in its place. These plants, such as candle bush and native ginger are going to attract butterflies to RVRC. All in all RV Green Rangers organised a long and very productive weekend that will help to attract more wildlife to RVRC and might bring some harvest of college grown bananas in the near future.
