The URA is Singapore’s land use planning authority that works towards creating a vibrant and sustainable city using a forward-looking planning framework incorporating economic, social, and environmental considerations. Participating students on the Industry Visit on 16th August enjoyed a guided tour of the Singapore City Gallery, led by a volunteer docent. The tour enabled students to learn more about the increasing public engagement efforts undertaken by the URA in crafting the Singapore Masterplan vision. The visit also included an interaction with URA's Outreach Division, to gain insights about public engagement activities as well as the diverse internship and career opportunities at URA.
Some thoughts shared by our students who participated in the visit:
'Long-term strategic planning was and still is essential in mapping out Singapore's landscape to suit the needs of our people and our future. I enjoyed learning more about this process, including how the concept and master plans are constantly reviewed and referenced in the planning of current future developments. It is also no easy feat to balance between industry/work, play, green spaces, conservation efforts and many more factors that go into urban planning; one can imagine the amount of data and research required to formulate those plans.'
'I really liked seeing how URA presents Singapore’s development and the considerations that go into the planning of Singapore. The interactive exhibitions also presented ideas of land scarcity very clearly. The short Q&A segment by the staff was also very enjoyable and the answers were very helpful.'
'The trip to the URA Singapore City Gallery was an insightful one. I came away with a new sense of pride and awe for the foresight and detail that has gone into and continues to go into the planning of Singapore's urban development. I also learnt more about the career and internship opportunities at URA.'
