Taking a break from the campus after the gruelling mid-terms, 34 RVRC students visited the Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle @ Lor Tawas, home to one of Singapore's only two traditional wood-fired Dragon Kilns. As part of the RVRC Heritage Immersion series, organised in collaboration with Artelier, students participated in an educational tour of the traditional wood-fired dragon kiln to learn more about how this traditional craft is sustained in Singapore by a small group of passionate potters. While visiting this hidden gem, students were also offered a pottery workshop for beginners as they crafted individual creations using the slab technique. They enjoyed a relaxing and stress-free morning spent in the company of friends, while working creatively with clay.
One of our participants shared: 'I was able to learn more about the pottery history and heritage in Singapore. It definitely isn't easy to maintain heritage as urbanisation continues and more people may leave the trade. But it was enlightening to know how the Pottery Jungle continues to strive to preserve this by supporting pottery artists and operating the dragon kiln 2 to 3 times a year.’
