Welcome to RVRC

Nature, Nurture, Adventure

RVRC was founded on the integrated themes of sustainability and workplace readiness. Many of our courses incorporate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to prepare students for their future workplace. RVRC Fellows believe that learning for this mission needs to be multifaceted; we focus on experiential outdoor learning and collaborate with external partners, treating the world as our classroom. Students are also encouraged to join meaningful college activities, diverse interest groups, events, or adopt student leadership roles towards this mission. This is aptly summed up by our new college slogan, launched as part of the RV10 celebrations: Nature, Nurture, Adventure.

Upon joining RVRC, students become a member of our diverse residential community and are invited to engage with peers in bonding activities that make RVRC a home away from home. Thus, when joining RVRC, students become members of a close-knit community, meet many people, and form friendships that might last a lifetime. Each of the RVRC residential blocks is organised in a House, represented by a rare or endangered animal native to Singapore:

Manis [Sunda Pangolin]: Block A

Strix [Spotted Wood Owl]: Block B

Aonynx [Asian Small-clawed Otter]: Block C

Orcaella [Irrawaddy Dolphin]: Block D

Rusa [Sambar Deer]: Block E

Chelonia [Green Sea Turtle]: Block F Levels 1-4

Panthera [Malayan Tiger]: Block F Level 5-8

Location

RVRC is the only residential college situated outside University Town and in the centre of Kent Ridge Campus. Our residents benefit from RVRC’s strategic location at the heart of the university, well-connected and within walking proximity to all the faculties. This location allows our students quick and easy access to their classes as well as key student life facilities. The NUS Sports and Recreation Centre and the University Field are right across the road. On top of that, the University Health Centre is also just outside RVRC and many food options can be found nearby. In short, RVRC offers a prime location in the heart of the NUS campus.

History

RVRC is housed in the former Ridge View Residences at NUS. The visually distinct brick-clad interconnected buildings are nestled against the lush backdrop of the Kent Ridge Forest, creating the 'kampung' atmosphere the college prides itself for. The college has a distinctive laid back atmosphere with its landscaped open courtyards, heritage trees, and views out to the forest behind. Quite unlike the typically dense Singaporean urban setting, the walk-up buildings are interspersed with generous and verdant green spaces for residents to interact in, and enjoy nature. These spaces come alive with student activities, as well as a variety of resident and visiting fauna from the forest.

The college was formally established in April 2014, under the leadership and vision of the inaugural College Master Professor Adekunle Adeyeye. Along with the Director of Studies, Associate Professor Lee Kooi Cheng, he established the RVRC Programme and welcomed the pioneer RVRC student cohort to the college in Aug 2014.
