NUS Dialogues and Industry Visits - BCA
RVRC organized an industry visit with the Building Construction Authority (Singapore) on 10th November 2017 as part of its DIV series for Year One students. The focus was to observe the BCA's work for Shoreline Restoration at East Coast Park. The outdoor visit began with a short explanation of the need for shoreline protection in Singapore showcasing the various diverse methodologies adopted by BCA to mitigate the impact of soil erosion and climate change on the coastline over the years. This was accompanied by an explanation of the interdisciplinary engineering and environmental challenges that need to be addressed during the planning, implementation and maintenance stages of their work.
Students walked to several locations along the beach to observe firsthand the various features at close range. The visit wrapped up with the onset of a loud thunderstorm while discussing potential internship opportunities with Mr. Ho Chai Teck and Dr. Ryan. from the BCA's Coastal Protection Department.
