On 18 October 2022, RVRC was privileged to host a panel talk on “What Makes Singapore ‘Singapore’?” for RVC1000 students. Three distinguished speakers made up the panel: Mr Steven Chia from Channel NewsAsia, Mr Malminderjit Singh from Hume Brophy, and Associate Professor Elmie Nekmat from NUS. Held at the University Hall Auditorium, the panel spoke to a full house of 108 students. The panel speakers enthralled and regaled the audience with their insights into Singapore’s culture and comparisons with cultures experienced abroad. Thoughtful questions were served to all three speakers, who answered on topics ranging from what defines Singapore’s culture to the role of social media in shaping it. Even after the talk ended, many students stayed back to discuss ‘hot button’ issues such as the role of meritocracy in Singapore. The RVC1000 teaching team hopes to be able to invite these speakers again to enrich the RVRC community!
