The Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) has been organising an annual college walk across the Southern Ridges since 2016. Spanning over eight kilometres, the walk typically begins at the RVRC Lawn, through Kent Ridge Park, Telok Blangah Hill, Henderson Waves and ends at Mount Faber. An additional “Sunset View” route, which is eleven kilometres long, has been conceptualised by the RV Explorers interest group this year, which leads participants from RVRC to Kent Ridge Park, Berlayer Creek, and the coastal boardwalk to Harbour Front. These walks are part of the college's commitment to outdoor education and community service. The annual RVRC Walks for Rice have been supported by college students, staff, and their families over the years - for every 300m walked by a participant, NTUC donates one bowl of white rice, one bowl of brown rice and one bowl of oatmeal to underprivileged families in the South-West CDCD.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the college decided to adapt the walk by adopting a decentralized format, where students and staff could walk or run within smaller groups. With Covid regulations easing, the student leaders of RV Explorers have been taking the lead in organising two RVRC Walks for Rice during January 2023. A total of 37 of local and exchange students and RVRC fellows joined to walk the traditional and the Sunset View routes, to clock in a cumulative total of 354.01 km. Additionally, 26 members of the RVRC community walked or jogged the routes contributing a total of 357.03km.
Given the high emphasis placed by the college on outdoor education and experiential learning, this year several additional contributions to the community service effort were achieved by students walking during their RVRC module fieldtrips. RVSS1000 Exploring Sense of Place conducted two fieldtrips- to the Bukit Brown Cemetery and the Labrador Park & Nature Reserve, while RVSS1001 Imagining Wakanda conducted a series of walks at Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park. Finally, students enrolled in RVC1001 The Rocky Road to SDGs participated in a guided fieldtrip exploring Little India and the Bangla Market. Collectively, 179 RVRC students and three fellows participated in these walks during January 2023 and accumulated an additional 450.6km, which brings RVRC’s contribution to a total of 1161.64km, which equates to a total of 3872 bowls of white rice, brown rice, and oatmeal donated by the RCRC community to the Southwest CDC!
