Following six classroom sessions, 17 students, 1 TA, and RVRC fellow Patricia Lorenz braved the rainy season as they embarked on their Overseas Fieldtrip to Perak, Malaysia. Their first stop was Merapoh, where students worked with the Community Partner MYCAT (The Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers is an alliance of non-governmental organisations comprising the Malaysian Nature Society, Traffic Southeast Asia, Wildlife Conservation Society-Malaysia Programme and WWF-Malaysia). Together with the Orang Asli community rangers and MYCAT guides, students patrolled jungle trails to protect the critically endangered Malayan tigers. Students also participated in tree planting to help restore the forest in the Sungai Yu Ecological Corridor. Their next stop was Kuala Tahan and Taman Negara: students walked several trails with Ecotourism & Conservation Society Malaysia (ECOMY) guides, engaged in forest bathing, night walks, and visited two Bateq villages. Their last stop was Fraser's Hill where students walked trails, surveyed frogs, watched birds, and other amazing wildlife.
The learning, experience, and adventures were captured in Fieldtrip Project videos created by the students. Check them out on the RVN2002 YouTube Channel 💜
