SMARC

On the 31st of January, 30 RVRC students led by Charles Pang (Residential Fellow) visited HP’s Smart Manufacturing Application and Research Centre (SMARC) for an industrial visit. The visit started with an overview of the sustainability and green initiatives that HP is directly championing in Haiti, China and India, including how these initiatives have impacted people’s lives especially in Haiti by giving them jobs, education and greater hope of a better life. Mr Lionel Ch’ng, Managing Director of HP Inc Singapore, then gave an introduction to HP, but it was no ordinary introduction as he shared his vast knowledge about manufacturing, business, employment, internships, economics, and even a bit of politics. The students were highly impressed and inspired by the engaging talk given by Lionel.  Finally, the students were given a tour of the 3-D printing and the Cobot labs where they were shown samples of 3-D printed objects ranging from cheaper commercial replacement parts to delicate tiny wired rings and interacted with experimental cobots. It was an enriching and fun visit which left the students thinking differently about Singapore’s manufacturing abilities, the direct impact of sustainability on human lives and the future of 3-D printing.
