On 19 Feb afternoon, 23 RVRC students participated in a DIV visit to Siloso Beach Resort in Sentosa. Since 2008, the resort has effectively carried out a good number of sustainability practices. In the short 90 minutes, Mr Karl Fischer, the resort's CSR manager, brought the students on an insightful tour and shared the various sustainability measures and design features in place. What impressed everyone was the resort's focus on sustainability and their attention to details. For example, each villa was built around at least two or more trees. The type and growth rate of the trees were even factored in the room design. The closed loop practices are also evident in the food waste composting system through the resort's own womery and fish breeding system. It was an informative and enriching visit which got the students thinking about how sustainability can be integrated with design to bring about tangible benefits to the hospitality industry.
